There are two species of the genus Indigofera that can be found on the islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, Indigofera tinctoria or the True indigo, that can be found on Bonaire and Curaçao (not on Aruba), and the Indigofera suffruticosa also called the West Indian indigo, that can be found on all three islands Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. This last one, the Indigofera suffruticosa is native to the Caribbean and South Americas as opposed to the Indigofera tinctoria.
The flower on the photo is of the Indigofera tinctoria, or True Indigo. A plant introduced to many parts of the world for the ability to extract Indigo blue dye from its leaves in a intricate process that was also done on Curaçao in historic times.
The True indigo flower is small, just over half a centimetre in length and pink but as such it is still difficult to distinguish both species from each other if you are not experienced at distinguishing them. There are several aspects of the plant you have to take into account to correctly identify each species. Are the stems rounded, are the leaves covered in hairs only on the underside, are the seedpods mostly straight instead of very curved, than you are looking at the imported variety of the plant. This plant originates in tropical Africa and Asia and has been spread out all over the world in pursue of the much coveted Indigo blue dye used in several applications including arts.

Wilde bloemen – Indigofera tinctoria
Er zijn twee soorten van het geslacht Indigofera die op de eilanden Aruba, Bonaire en Curaçao voorkomen: Indigofera tinctoria, oftewel de echte indigo, te vinden op de eilanden Bonaire en Curaçao, en Indigofera suffruticosa, ook wel de West-Indische indigo genoemd die op zowel Aruba, Bonaire en Curaçao te vinden is. Alleen de laatste, de Indigofera suffruticosa, is inheems in het Caribisch gebied en Zuid-Amerika en dus ook voor de eilanden.
De bloem op de foto is van de Indigofera tinctoria, oftewel de echte indigo. Deze plant werd in veel delen van de wereld geïntroduceerd vanwege het vermogen om indigoblauwe kleurstof uit de bladeren te winnen via een ingewikkeld proces dat in het verleden ook op Curaçao werd toegepast.
De echte indigobloem is klein, iets meer dan een halve centimeter lang en roze, maar daardoor is het nog steeds moeilijk om beide soorten van elkaar te onderscheiden als je geen ervaring hebt met het onderscheiden ervan. Er zijn verschillende aspecten van de plant waarmee je rekening moet houden om elke soort correct te identificeren. Zijn de stengels rond, zijn de bladeren alleen aan de onderkant behaard, zijn de zaaddozen meestal recht in plaats van sterk gebogen, dan heeft u te maken met een geïmporteerde variant van de plant. Deze plant komt oorspronkelijk uit tropisch Afrika en Azië en is over de hele wereld verspreid op zoek naar de felbegeerde indigoblauwe kleurstof die in diverse toepassingen, waaronder kunst, wordt gebruikt.
