Longhorn beetles, as this family of insects is officially called—in English Long-horned beetles, or ‘drilling beetles’(boortor) as we very often call these animals on Curaçao. The family of these insects is officially called Cerambycidae and consists of more than 30,000 species worldwide. We have quite a lot of them on our islands as well, but not all of them have been identified yet. This has various reasons such as the fact that the animals do not show themselves very regularly in fixed locations, up to recently there was little interest or money for research on the identification of the species occurring here, and little was known about them in the region in general. Fortunately, the scientific interest for insects on the ABC islands is changing, and several studies are underway or in preparation, on all three ABC-islands.
No official popular name
The Orange longhorn beetle is not officially called that; no popular name has been designated for these animals yet, but we do know that the scientific name is Oxymerus aculeatus, a species belonging to the family Cerambycidae (longhorn beetles). The main characteristics of the Cerambycidae are an elongated body often displaying the most beautiful colors, long thin legs, and extremely long antennae, often segmented and usually much longer than the animals’ bodies. This is clearly visible in the photos of the Orange longhorn beetle. The animals are bright orange in color and have black spots on the thorax of the body, as well as black and yellow-orange stripes on the wing covers. Adults can reach a length of 17 millimeters and are active during the day. Very little is known about the behavior of these animals and their interaction with other animals. We also know little about the range of their diet. From a publication from Brazil we do know that this species was “found in corn fields at the Federal University of Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, during the flowering period and damaging the reproductive part of the plant”. We also know that the larvae develop in dead wood and that the species occurs in various parts of South, Central, and North America, as well as the Caribbean, including Curaçao and Aruba.

Kleine beestjes: Oranje boktor (Oxymerus aculeatus)
Boktorren, zoals deze familie van insecten officieel heet, in het Engels Long-horned beetles, of boortorren zoals we deze dieren op Curaçao heel vaak noemen. De familie van deze insecten heet officieel Cerambycidae en bestaat wereldwijd uit meer dan 30.000 soorten. Daarvan hebben we er op onze eilanden ook best wel veel, alleen zijn die nog niet allemaal op naam gebracht. Dat heeft een scala aan redenen waaronder het feit dat de dieren zich niet heel regelmatig op vaste plekken laten zien, er tot voor kort weinig wetenschappelijke interesse of geld was voor de identificatie van de hier voorkomende soorten, en er sowieso weinig over bekend was in de regio. Gelukkig komt er verandering in de interesse voor insecten op de ABC-eilanden en zijn er meerdere onderzoeken gaande of in voorbereiding.
Geen officiële populaire naam
De Oranje boktor heet officieel niet zo; er is nog geen populaire naam verzonnen voor deze dieren, maar we weten wel dat de wetenschappelijke naam Oxymerus aculeatus is, een soort die behoort tot de familie Cerambycidae (boktorren). De voornaamste eigenschappen van de Cerambycidae zijn een langwerpig lichaam met vaak de prachtigste kleuren, lange dunne poten en extreem lange antennes, vaak gesegmenteerd, en meestal veel langer dan het lijfje van de dieren. Dat is goed te zien op de foto’s van de Oranje boktor. De dieren zijn feloranje van kleur en hebben zwarte stippen op de thorax van het lijfje, en zwarte en geeloranje strepen op de dekvleugels. De volwassen dieren kunnen 17 millimeter lang worden en zijn overdag actief. Er is heel weinig bekend over het gedrag van deze dieren en de interactie met andere dieren. Ook weten we weinig over wat ze eten. Uit een publicatie uit Brazilië weten we dat deze soort “werd aangetroffen in maïsvelden van de Federale Universiteit van Viçosa, in de staat Minas Gerais, Brazilië, tijdens de bloeiperiode, waarbij de soort schade aanrichtte aan het voortplantingsorgaan van de plant”. We weten alleen dat de larven zich ontwikkelen in dood hout en dat de soort voorkomt in verschillende delen van Zuid-, Midden- en Noord-Amerika, als ook het Caribisch gebied, waaronder Curaçao en Aruba.
