The ABC-islands can get special bird visitors even beyond the ‘regular’ migratory season. Usually the fall migration, which starts mid-August, and the much less spectacular Spring migration, which starts mid-March), are the times of the year to find some incredible sightings on the islands. However, the mid summer months starting as early as the beginning of May, offer some surprises as well, and the funky looking Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger) is one of those. While it was usually the months of June, July and August that the special Black skimmers could be seen on our islands, nowadays the month of May is also suitable for these birds to show themselves. These strange-looking birds can be seen on Aruba in areas such as Saliña, Spaans Lagoen and the Bubali Bird Canctuary, on Bonaire at Sorobon / Lac bay and Washikemba, and on Curaçao along the coast or in the salt pans of Jan Thiel, in the dam of Muizenberg and also along the lagoons at the Golf courses on the island.
Black skimmers are conspicuous birds, coloured in black and white and with a strangely shaped beak. The bottom of the beak is longer than the top and that makes it very suitable for fishing at the waters surface. They open their beak and skim just over the water surface while the under part of the beak is under water. In this way they can scoop up prey such as small fish.

Bijzondere bezoekers: Amerikaanse schaarbekken
De ABC-eilanden kunnen ook buiten het ‘reguliere’ migratieseizoen bijzondere vogelbezoekers verwelkomen. Normaal gesproken zijn de najaarsmigratie (die half augustus begint) en de veel minder spectaculaire voorjaarsmigratie (die half maart begint) de periodes waarin je ongelooflijke waarnemingen op de eilanden kunt doen. Maar ook de zomermaanden, met een extensie day al begin mei begint, bieden verrassingen, en de opvallende Amerikaanse schaarbek (Rynchops niger) is er daar één van. Hoewel de bijzondere Amerikaanse schaarbekken meestal in juni, juli en augustus op onze eilanden te zien waren, is mei tegenwoordig ook een geschikte maand voor deze vogels om zich te laten zien. Deze bijzonder uitziende vogels zijn te vinden op Aruba in gebieden zoals Saliña, Spaans Lagoen en het Bubali Vogelreservaat, op Bonaire bij Sorobon/Lac Bay en Washikemba, en op Curaçao langs de kust of in de zoutpannen van Jan Thiel, in de dam van Muizenberg en ook langs de lagunes bij de golfbanen op het eiland.
De Amerikaanse schaarbek is een opvallende vogel, zwart-wit gekleurd en met een merkwaardig gevormde snavel. De onderkant van de snavel is langer dan de bovenkant, waardoor hij zeer geschikt is om aan het wateroppervlak te vissen. Ze openen hun snavel en scheren vlak over het wateroppervlak, terwijl de onderkant van de snavel onder water blijft. Op deze manier kunnen ze prooien zoals kleine vissen vangen.
Deze vogels komen op bezoek vanuit Zuid-Amerika.
