Curaçao has about 60 species of butterflies and more than twice that number of moth species. Some butterfly species are very striking because of their bright colors and also their size. The large Monarch butterfly with its bright orange and deep black markings is a good example of this. Just like the equally orange but with less black markings Gulf Fritillary that likes to visit the wild passion flower. Other butterflies are very small and inconspicuous. Until you decide to make your eyes take a better look at this inconspicuous world of small butterflies. Then a world of colours opens up for you. And especially if you delve a little deeper into the world of the gossamer-winged butterflies. When they close their wings, the animals blend in very well with their environment because they are fantastically adapted to the greyish brown background of our mondi. When the animals start to flap their wings or open them, the most beautiful blue reflections suddenly appear. One of the species belonging to this family that can be found on all three islands Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, is the Telea Hairstreak.
Although this small butterfly is not very rare, it took us a long time to finally find it in such conditions that we had the time to concentrate well while photographing. This little insect is a beauty. The Bèrdè-blou, as it is called in Papiamentu, can be found on Curacao, Aruba and Bonaire.
It is small, only about 2 centimeters long, but has the most amazing colors on the underside of its wings. Bright green with white, deep burgundy, blue, black and orange patterns.
The individual in the photo did not want us to photograph the top of its wings, but we saw it open and close its wings a few times, showing the most amazing deep iridescent blue. And that showed that we were looking at a male individual of the species. With the females the coloration is much less conspicuous.
These butterflies can be found on flowers of the Brazilwood (Brasia, Haematoxylon brasiletto) as well as the flowers of the Dividivi/watapana (Caesalpinia coriaria), and Wayaca (Guaiacum officinale).

Curaçao heeft ongeveer 60 soorten vlinders en meer dan twee keer dat aantal aan soorten motten. Sommige vlindersoorten zijn zeer opvallend te noemen vanwege hun felle kleuren en ook hun omvang. De grote monarchvlinder met zijn feloranje en diepzwarte tekening is hier een goed voorbeeld van. Net zoals de eveneens oranje maar met minder zwart getekende Gulf Fritillary dat graag de wilde passiebloem bezoekt. Andere vlinders zijn juist weer heel klein en onopvallend. Tot je besluit om je ogen wat beter de kost te geven en een kijkje te nemen in dit onopvallende wereldje van de kleine vlinders. Dan gaat er een wereld van kleuren voor je open. En helemaal als je je wat verdiept in de wereld van de Lycaenidae (kleine pages, vuurvlinders en blauwtjes). Als ze hun vleugels dicht hebben gaan de dieren zo op in hun milieu doordat ze fantastisch aangepast zijn aan de grijzige bruine achtergrond van onze mondi. Als de dieren met hun vleugels gaan wapperen of deze openen dan komen ineens de allermooiste blauwe reflecties voor de dag. Een van de blauwtjessoorten die we op ons eiland kunnen vinden is de Telea Hairstreak.
Hoewel deze kleine vlinder niet erg zeldzaam is, kostte het ons veel tijd om het uiteindelijk in dusdanige omstandigheden te vinden dat we de tijd hadden om ons goed te concentreren tijdens het fotograferen. Dit kleine insect is een schoonheid. De Bèrdè-blou, zoals het dier in het Papiaments wordt genoemd is te vinden op Curaçao, Aruba en Bonaire.
Het is een kleine vlinder, slechts ongeveer 2 centimeter lang, maar heeft de meest verbazingwekkende kleuren aan de onderzijde van zijn vleugels. Heldergroen met witte, diepe bordeauxrode, blauwe, zwarte en oranje patronen.
Het individu op de foto wilde niet dat we de bovenkant van zijn vleugels fotografeerden, maar we zagen hem een paar keer de vleugels open en dicht doen waarbij het meest verbazingwekkende diepe iriserende blauw zich liet zien. En dat toonde aan dat we naar een mannetje aan het kijken waren. Bij de vrouwtjes is het blauw namelijk veel minder intens.
Deze vlinders zijn te vinden op de bloemen van de Brasia (Haematoxylon brasiletto), maar ook op de bloemen van de Dividivi/watapana (Caesalpinia coriaria) en de Wayaca (Guaiacum officinale).
