Curaçao has species of animals, like this butterfly, that are very rare and require a great deal of luck to spot. The Basilides hairstreak also called the Megarus Scrub-Hairstreak (Strymon megarus) is a butterfly species that can usually only be found during certain periods of the year in certain spots within Christoffel Park, primarily in the park’s hills. Often years go by without a sighting of the species.
The butterfly measures only 2.6 centimetres from wingtip to wingtip. The authors of the book “Butterflies and moths of Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire” already indicated upon publication in 2004 that the species found on Curaçao is very different in pattern and color compared to its nominal appearance and that further research was required to determine whether it was/is actually this species, a subspecies, or even a completely different species. In 2016, the butterfly in the photo was spotted on a flowering Tuna plant (Opuntia elatior) in the hills of Christoffel National Park.
The butterflies that were collected for identification and later publication of the aforementioned book, were found on flowering Basora pretu (Varronia curassavica) and Basora kòrá (Melochia tomentosa), as well as on the flowers of the Dividivi (Libidibia coriaria).
The species, previously known as Strymon basilides and now as Strymon megarus, is considered to be a true pest in other countries, particularly in pineapple cultivation, elsewhere in the Caribbean and in countries like Costa Rica. The butterfly’s caterpillars feed on pineapple plants and can thus cause significant economic damage.
It is unclear to what extent the species in Curaçao damages plants related to the pineapple or whether they have a different food plant. After spotting the butterfly in 2016, despite several search attempts, we have not found it again in the vicinity of the hills in the park.

Vlindersoort: Basilides hairstreak
Curaçao kent verschillende soorten dieren, zoals deze vlindersoort, die heel zeldzaam zijn en waar je echt een grote dosis geluk moet hebben om ze te spotten. De Basilides hairstreak of Megarus Scrub-Hairstreak (Strymon megarus) is een vlindersoort die je doorgaans alleen in sommige perioden kunt vinden in bepaalde plekjes in het Christoffelpark, en dan voornamelijk in de heuvels van het park. Vaak gaan er jaren voorbij zonder dat de soort wordt gesppot.
Het vlindertje is maar 2,6 centimeter van vleugeltip tot vleugeltip. Auteurs van het boek ‘Butterflies and moths of Curaçao, Aruba en Bonaire’ gaven bij publicatie van het boek in 2004 al aan dat de soort zoals die op Curaçao voorkomt heel verschillend is qua patronen en kleuren in vergelijking met het nominale uiterlijk van de soort en dat om verder onderzoek vroeg om aan te tonen of het daadwerkelijk deze soort was/is of dat het een ondersoort betrof of zelfs een geheel andere soort. In 2016 werd het vlindertje op de foto gespot op een bloeiende Tuna plant (Opuntia elatior) in de heuvels van het Christoffelpark. De vlinders die gevangen zijn voor determinatie en latere publicatie van het eerder genoemde boek werden gevonden op bloeiende Basora pretu (Varronia curassavica) en Basora kòrá (Melochia tomentosa), en ook op de bloemen van de Dividivi (Libidibia coriaria).
De soort die eerder de wetenschappelijke naam Strymon basilides had en nu de wetenschappelijk naam Strymon megarus draagt, is elders in het Caribisch gebied en ook in landen als Costa Rica, een ware plaag in voornamelijk de ananasteelt. De rupsen van de vlinder vreten namelijk de planten van de ananas aan en kunnen daarmee aanzienlijke economische schade veroorzaken.
Het is niet duidelijk in hoeverre de soort op Curaçao schade aanricht aan planten die familie zijn van de ananas of dat ze een andere voedselplant hebben. Na het spotten van de vlinder in 2016 hebben we, ondanks verschillende zoekpogingen, de soort niet meer aangetroffen in de omgeving van de heuvels in het park.
